Originally built in 1923 to provide water to steam power locomotives due to nearby springs.  The station also served as a restaurant to train passengers because of the distance across the desert. Kelso grew to about 2000 people in the 40's when iron was mined 9mi to the south at the Vulcan Mine for WWII. This ore was transported by train to Kaiser Steel in Fontana. The mine was closed after the war because the ore contained too much sulfur. The Kelso community shrank dramatically at that point.
